About The Property
The Great House is an 8 bedroom hidden gem located on Turtle Beach in St Peter, tucked away on the west coast of Barbados and oozes character and atmosphere.
The Great House was designed as a family home by celebrated local architect Ian Morrison in the traditional plantation style and is constructed from local coral stone. The two chattel houses close to the main house were added later and are also traditional in style – chattel houses were originally built to accommodate plantation workers.
The house stands in approximately 1.5 acres of what is generally acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful gardens on the island. These grounds spill onto the white sand beach with its palm trees and, beyond, the blue waters of the Caribbean.
The main house’s interior has been refurbished in a style that blends East Coast sophistication, Barbadian flair and beachside informality. The bathrooms in the main house have just been completely redone, giving a luxurious and modern feel to the villa.
The ground floor has a spacious entrance hall, with the reception and piano room opening completely out on to the wrap-around terraces and onwards to the lush tropical gardens. rooms. There is one bedroom suite on this level. The sweeping staircase leads up to a further three bedroom suites. All the suites are individually furnished and the beds, dressed in Ralph Lauren linen, are sumptuously comfortable. The three upstairs suites have individual balconies, while the ground floor suite opens onto a cobbled courtyard.
Within the grounds of The Great House are two chattel houses which are arranged in two pairs. There are two bedrooms in each house which interlink, making them ideal for families with younger children. The chattel houses open out onto their own verandas, with the gardens beyond. Like the suites in the main house, all the chattels have en suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, air conditioning and safes.
Every aspect of The Great House encourages guests to enjoy themselves in the way they choose. There is ample space to indulge yourself in moments of solitude, yet the arrangement of the house and chattels around the pool invites sociability.
The staff at The Great House is lead by Cressida Dawson, who ensures that every aspect of her guests holiday is taken care of. Her creativity in the kitchen is some of the best on the island and as a result food is one of The Great House’s greatest pleasures. You will find that the service at The Great House, while always attentive, is unobtrusive.
The Great House’s 30 ft Grady White pleasure boat, with twin engines, is both highly seaworthy and very comfortable. It is manned by the villa’s boatman and is available to guests throughout their stay from 9 am to 5 pm, for just the price of fuel. The boat has an on board shower and bathroom, a cooler that can be packed with refreshments, and a supply of cold towels. Water sport fans will love it for water skiing and wake boarding, or towing the villa’s Great Big Mable, Half Pipe Tube or Six Man Sled. It can also be used to take guests to another beach for a picnic, snorkelling, fishing, turtle feeding or as a water taxi.
In addition, The Great House also has a single and double kayak and a Laser sailboat, with trailer, that guests are welcome to use.
This is a family beach house for relaxation and pleasure. Many guests find they rarely wish to leave the property during – or, indeed, at the end of – their stay. Many also come back. What they value is the way The Great House allows them to design their own holiday – as a special party, a spa holiday, a wedding or just a way to spend time with family and friends.
The Great House is the epitome of gracious living.
